PAINTING TIP - DRYBRUSH & SCUMBLING
Never underestimate the power of the drybrush
technique in your painting. It really can add nice
highlights or create deeper shadows. Take the time
to experiment with this in your art for some new
exciting touches. This technique can be applied in
oil painting, acrylic painting , pastel, gouache,
watercolor and other watermedia.
Just look at the work of Andrew Wyeth!(famous
image above of "Christina's World") This man
drybrushed himself to great success and it has
become a signature technique for him. It sets his
work apart.
Barely load your brush with paint and lightly
brush across the surface of your painting. The
degree of wetness of the surface and the degree of
wetness of the paint will determine the outcome.
If necessary, wipe off some of the paint with
a paper towel or rag for a dryer effect. Experiment.
With drybrush technique you can create a
number of textures for stones, bark, foliage, and
any place where you want to paint a natural
looking surface.
Another VERY IMPORTANT thing!!!!!! Please
try to leave your drybrush strokes alone after
you are done. Everything does not have to be all
reality or tons of detail. Drybrush can subtly
suggest things that your viewer's eye will then
fill in for themselves. And, you are the artist...
and that was just a suggestion. Artists...haven't
we all had the problem of not knowing when to
quit on a certain passage of our paintings??? I
know I have!!!
Scumbling technique can be used to blur or
soften color or outlines by covering it with a film
of semiopague or opague paint...or..by rubbing or
scrubbing with that paint. As I said in yesterdays
blog entry, I scumbled the colors in the clouds to
create the soft cloud effect I wanted. The back-
ground sky was to be flattened and I felt the
scumbling would also preserve the light shining.
Scumbling can be used with oil, acrylic, pastel,
watercolor and other watermedia. So, try it,
experiment on lots of surfaces. It's an exciting
technique.
