Above is a famous series of paintings done by Claude Monet. He was a master of doing a "series of works". One was his "Haystacks series" These are of the Thames river in London. There was another series of a French Cathedral.
I have done work in "series" in the past and want to do another series in 2011. I haven't picked my sunject matter except that it will be landscape.
Off the top of my head I remember my "waterlilly series" (inspired by who else but Claude Monet). Then there was a series of the Shiawassee River.
Thomas Moran
American, born England, 1837 – 1926
Part of the romantic tradition in late nineteenth-century landscape painting, Thomas Moran is most recognized for his idealized scenes celebrating the American West, though he depicted other areas, notably Florida and Long Island, New York. A work he showed in 1889, A Pastoral, is probably the Flint Institute of Arts' or a variant. In a review of the 1889 annual exhibition, a critic noted that "A Pastoral… possesses an undeniable scenic grandeur… Its only fault as a composition is that it is a little too perfect." Moran's paintings were largely produced from on-site sketches and completed in his studio. In A Pastoral Landscape, Moran has concentrated on the lushness of the low-lying Long Island marshland by giving a velvety quality to the paint surface
Down to one Assistant
As some of you know one of my studio assistants, Red Dog, my 50 pound mutt, died earlier this year.
My remaining studio assistant, Sammi the beagle, has been hard at work. At the ripe age of 14, she no longer strives to eat paint, chew brushes, rip canvas, or rummage through waste paper baskets.
She has a true spirit of artist discipline and focus.
THE BLUFF OF LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY in Harbor Springs is a timeless view of Lake Michigan harbor town.
The Impressionist style of this painting is done In a "high key". It's a light painting as opposed to something like a night scene which would be called "low key". I used a palette knife for this piece. The thick paint makes such a great texture and it's fun to run your hand over it. (don't do this to other people's paintings...ask first)
Little Traverse Yacht club, beaches, sailing, shops, Art Galleries (of course), The Pier Restaurant and Bar harbor bar are only a few of the "things to do" here in Harbor Springs in Northern Michigan.
You can always pick up a paintbrush and create a paintings too!!!

The value of the THUMBNAIL SKETCH for your painting cannot be underestimated. These little gems are worth their weight in gold!!!!!

The thumbnail sketch will set up your painting's composition, value, color, mood, focal point, light source, and shape.
All of this, in just the time it takes to do a few 3" x 5" sketches. ( or smaller if you wish) Due to their small size, it is easy to test a few different ideas for one painting. These mini sketches in black and white or color have been real time savers for me in painting watercolors. You just cannot scrape the paint off watercolor paper as you would with oils on canvas or hardboard.
Artists, make your life easier and do a thumbnail sketch.
Test your composition. Are your shapes in a pleasing arrangement? Are your design elements in the places where they will reflect your image nicely?
Test your values. Do your darkest darks and lightest lights work well with your middle values? Do they help your eye to travel around or do they make your eye fly off the page?
Test your shapes. Are they too complicated? Do they link together in some way. Are they falling off the page?
Test some of your color choices. Are they too busy? Should you limit your palette?
In a landscape painting, the thumbnail sketch can be valuable to get down the light and dark shapes that may be quickly changing with the light.
Many artists who use thumbnail sketches only do them in black and white. In the painting above, I wanted to add some color to test this option. Thumbnails are not meant to be works of art, but quick GUIDELINES to make your painting flow smoothly.

I WON AN ART SHOW COMPETITION, ORIGINAL PAINTING ICE SKATERS.
sometimes you win..sometimes you don't. I was truly honored to receive from my
artist guild 1ST PLACE in our artist competition last night. Being in any juried
competition is a risk to take for any artist. Many pieces if fine art never receive
the recognition they deserve.
Earlier this year I had entered THIS SAME PAINTING in another art show and
and it did not even stir up comment, except for a negative one from the JUROR.
When you know in your heart that a certain piece of your artwork seemed totally
right from the beginning in terms of everything...composition, color, value, drama,
etc.... DON'T GIVE UP!! And, certainly don't determine your value as an artist
by whether or not you win in art competitions!
I was actually worried that this piece might turn off the juror because it was a
painting with a winter theme (and I think we are all just plain tired of that at this
point..it was a long winter). My point being, see how our minds work sometimes.
But, I felt I wanted to give this painting another go with competition.
Turned we had a fantastic juror, Kathryn Sharbaugh, one of the assistant directors
of the Institute of Arts, and, a very talented artist in her own right. Her warm
personality, engaging manner and professionalism were thoroughly enjoyed by
all.
The knife lends itself to an impressionist piece of art. And the loose painterly
feel adds more drama for me.
During its 98 years open, this Michigan restaurant has had some other artists
too..like author Ernest Hemingway. He frequented this place and used
some material for his work ! See..we artists know the spots.
And, The food here is GREAT!!!!! Petoskey is on the Little Traverse Bay section of Lake Michigan. Lots of art galleries here too!
CLAUDE MONET could have been painting in Michigan.
After viewing part of this exhibition of Monet's work, it hit me how similiar the scenery was to the state of Michigan.
The next time you see any of his work, keep that in mind.
If I could go back in time, I would have loved to invite him here to paint my beloved state. Guess I cannot say it enough..I love it here in Michigan and that is why I paint this landscape. Feeling passion about what you paint is what it is all about.

Being held the 1st weekend of September, it is a show you must put on your calendar for next year.

Having been birthed and nurtured in Pontiac, Michigan, this move to Royal Oak will ensure an art show for years and years to come. The people in Pontiac/Oakland County worked very hard to make this show what it is today.

Longest Suspension Bridge

The Mighty Mackinac Bridge of Michigan has drawn admirers since it opened in 1957.
IN THIS VERSION , I painted the wonderful blue of the lakes it connects and the light reflecting up the bridge. This painting also incorporates brush painting in oil paint and use of the painting knife. (sometimes called a palette knife)

It has many moods relative to the weather which provides an amazing backdrop. I am drawn to the bridge for the beauty of the area, the wide vistas, and the ever changing sky. The area underneath the bridge is "The Straits of Mackinac" and connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. These lakes are like inland seas.

I am also attracted to the symbolic nature of the bridge. It connects the Upper Pennisula of Michigan and the Lower Pennisula of Michigan. It keeps us together economically, physically and in spirit.
THE MIGHTY MAC , THE MACKINAC BRIDGE LABOR DAY

The Mackinac Bridge, the "Mighty Mac", is Michigan's most famous bridge connecting the Upper and Lower Pennisulas. It's location nestles between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The entire area surrounding it is beautiful and loaded with British and French history.
In this painting, it was sunset and the colorful sky added a wonderful backdrop to the bridge itself. The yellows backlit the bridge and helped me to paint one of it's many moods. This week I shall post the other Mackinac Bridge painting I have done which shows the bridge in completely different configuration and sky. With so many weather changes, there are inumerable beautiful, moody, bright, soft, misty paintings to be created.
Over 50 years old the Mackinac Bridge is the third longest suspension bridge in the world. The Famous Bridge Walk on Labor Day is an amazing 5 mile trek between the Mackinaw City on the south..across the bridge to St. Ignace on the north isde of the bridge. From the air it looks like the Moses leading the Hebrews through the Red Sea!!
the Mackinac Bridge website is an interesting spot to check out.

Smell the Pines, feel the gentle breeze and sparkling water. This is a bewitching place for any artist to work.
Any painting done at any time of the day seems
to always come out right at this spot. Michigan
is fortunate to be the home of the fabulous
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore,
the city of Empire, on Lake Michigan. Otter
lake is one inland lake in this area that sports
hiking, fishing, swimming, and being lazy.
This oil painting was part of a series of larger of
works done solely in this park. At the time I
was in my first year of using the new "water
base" oil paints. They are now very popular.
Clean up with water and No turpentine needed
was what drew me to them.
The landscape is sandy pines, sand bottom lake,
gentle breezes, dappled shade and a couple
vintage cottages. Painting here seems as natural
as breathing. Open your easel or paint box,
smell the pine breeze, lay out your paints, smell
the pine breeze, select your scene and the mood
of this spot will put your paintbrush flying.
